...A friend of mine wanted to know if she could borrow my Purple book after I was telling her about the story..so I figured ok maybe I can get a new fan for Matthew and after she reads the book she will want to sign up for the weekly chapters, Well 2 months later I finally got my book back and she DID NOT take very good care of it  Grumpy

The cover looks like it's ready to rip off, it has a big white spot on the cover that looks like someone took a easer and erased the the color right off.

She bent the pages to mark her place in stead of using some sort of bookmark  Angry

And to top it all off it even had dried on food on the cover !!!!!  OMG I was pissed.

I thought that when you loaned people things  that you were to take good care of it because it's not yours and return it in the matter that you received it?Huh?

And I'm one of those people that I like to keep all my books, movies whatever in the best shape possible.  I know what I'm going to end up doing it's going to bother me so bad that my beautiful shiny Purple book looks like crap that I'm going to order another one....lol  Which is all good, but I wil :-Il never loan out another book again...she killed it for me.

And yes I did give her a big speech about how to treat other peoples property and how I felt she owed me a new book so now ill wait to see if she hands me over the money for a new one....

Sad Suzanne that's awful! I had a roommate like that and she borrowed everything, took crappy care of it, and flat out destroyed some things that made me want to cry. I know exactly how you feel and she owes you a new book with a bow on it.  Waiting

Who bends the pages of someone else's book? Who eats lunch on top of some else's book? When you see the purple rubbing off, why not stop banging it around? What's wrong with people?!

Sheesh.

 Shocked

On behalf of book-lovers everywhere, I am horrified.

Even if you don't treat your own possessions with tender, loving care, it's common courtesy to be respectful of others' belongings.

I'm sorry about your book, and I am outraged on your behalf.

I have to agree.

I'm really surprised that you didn't beat her over the head with the damaged book, Sue.

Then another girl who was sitting there with us (at work) looked at me after I had this little chat with my friend about the way my book looked and said "Whats the big deal it's only a book, you read it then throw it aside"....Only a book she says.. Waiting

I told her that wasn't the point it was a special book to me and I trusted her to take good care of it. Then she just shrugged her shoulders and walked away  Boxing

Just a book???  Books are gateways to other worlds, escapes from our everyday lives.  Obviously, that woman doesn't read anything good or she wouldn't have that attitude.

I have a friend like that.  One time she borrowed one of my Lonely Planet books and returned them totally ruined with pages missing.  Angry  When I asked her about it, she said she had to go to the bathroom and there's no toilet paper so she used the pages in the book!  I made her buy me a new book.

I am a slob but there's one thing that I really take care of, and that's my books.  I'd finish a paperback and not leave any crease on the corners and the binder.  My literature teacher in high school gave me the third degree when he saw how I turn pages (using friction by sliding my forefinger on the page instead of lifting each page from the upper right corner of the book)  so from there I learned how to take care of books. Now I get palpitations just watching people read books by bending the pages backwards  Sick  So Suzanne, I totally agree with you.  Make her buy you a new book!

I don't understand how people do these things, and then just hand the book back to you.  As opposed to handing you a brand-new copy and then explaining.

That really freaking sucks, just thinking about anyone who would do that to any of my book makes me  want to whimper  and clutch my own books. I would have thrown a serious BF, I'm glad you told her off and keep hounding her until she pays up.

That is the most disgusting thing that i've ever heard anyone do with a book.  Was she lost on a desert island
or a contestant on survivor? Who does that! That would have been game over for me.
I use to think that the worst thing that a person could do to a book was break the spine, you guys have opened my eyes.

where do you guys find these people! I guess I got lucky with the flatmate thing.  I might suggest  that booklovers find roomates that are english and classics majors. They're use to handeling old books so anything that you lend out comes back in excellent condition.

Before, I thought the worst thing to happen when you lend a book is that you won't get it back, but, no, when my friend returned that ripped book to me, I don't think anything can top that.  Well, she's not allowed to borrow anymore books from me.
