Ok, I'm here to ask you all for some help with Sue.  She's got this idea in her head that somehow Hitari is going to end up with  Anosanim and Ritek with  Talin.  What time can we have an intervention?

Tell the truth, Sue - you don't think Hitari is going to get a life sentence, do you?

OK IM going to try and explain my answer a little better...  Cheesy     Hitari did break the law he made a bad decision and needs to be punished for it and I believe he will get life in jail but the comment K made in chapter 139:

“Inanodat, I’m sorry.”  Anosukinom sounded full of regret.  “You needed to see it through to the end with Hitari.  You were never going to find a better emotional place without being with him again.  And this could be a better life for Hitari, too.” “This?” the royal artist demanded.  “It’s better for him to be interrogated, put on trial, and sentenced to prison?  That’s one of the most horrible things I can imagine putting him through!”

“Hitari’s had a difficult life,” Anosukinom explained.  “He’s been so unhappy for so long, we just want him to find some true peace.  He’s happy with you, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to him.  You could have helped him to find that peace much sooner if he had made better decisions.  But now that he’s been discovered, he can still eventually find contentment with his life, before Oranomi comes for him.  And you can find the happiness which you deserve.”

Now I can see him finding peace and contentment sitting in jail he has a lot of time to think about past, present, future all the wrong decision he has made and how to improve himself and his life but how can he find a "better life"?  How can you live a better life behind bars?  I feel bad for Hitari, he is paying off a debt that was caused by his father his sister isn't helping in paying it off and he is also supporting her and her family and himself I can see how he could snap he's taking care of everyone and there debts. I guess im hoping the comment K made "  And this could be a better life for Hitari, too.” means that hopefully sometime in the future something will turn around for him and he will be set free to show himself and his family and friends and the siblings that he has changed and can lead a better life.  Pray   Sigh

:::goes and drags Jae into this conversation:::  Explain to her how Hitari is going to find peace in jail.  I know you'll have better words for it than I do.

Well, I suppose I could... try.  Hmm.  ::puts thinking cap on::

Honestly, I actually can see Hitari becoming a better person, finding contentment with his life, in prison.

Firstly, we don't know Anorian prison policies.  We do know that Anorians put the utmost importance on their relationship with the gods, and it seems clear that they don't allow their prisoners to languish, either.  It doesn't seem like they'd just throw them in and let their souls rot.  That's not much better--in terms of becoming a better person and growing closer to the gods--than execution, because nothing can change, no one can grow.  I think we can assume, from what we know about Anorian prisons now, that they have some sort of rehabilitation, visits with their family and priests, some way that will help them thrive spiritually.

Secondly, a big reason Hitari committed his crimes had to do with his father, and the lessons Horimo taught him, and time spent in prison dealing with the consequences might foster positive changes.

Ch.139:
But he was still his father’s son, still affected by what Horimo had done, still changed by Horimo’s influence over his life.  He’d absorbed enough of Horimo’s messages - - do what it takes, get ahead no matter what, put self above all others, live well or don’t live at all - - to fall into self-serving traps.  He’d seen an opportunity to get ahead, and he’d taken it.

The consequences of his crimes might change his outlook on his father's lessons forever, might finally be that push he needs to make him let all of those twisted lessons go.  Might make him realize that, rather than getting him ahead in life, his father's lessons were what actually caused him to lose... everything, really.  His career.  His freedom.  His relationship with Talin, though we know now wasn't going to last, would have at least ended differently, with him not in prison.  He lost the chance to move on with his life in a different way.

As with addiction, perhaps he needs this slap in the face, this moment of hitting rock-bottom, to truly understand that what he did was wrong, was a deep betrayal not only of the man he loved but his entire country, and that inside--in his core--he needs to change.  Needs to become a better person, for his own sake, for the sake of his own soul.

In prison, he won't have to deal with his father's debts, with "getting ahead" monetarily.  How can it be a priority anymore when, I imagine, earning an income in prison isn't permitted?  (Or else Horimo could have been paying his own debts back.)  With all that he's worked for gone, with his goals no longer within his reach, with all the good in his life crushed to nothing by his own hand, Hitari will have to look at what he's done and then look within to fix what's inside of him, to find some peace with his life and connect with the gods.  They didn't abandon him; he abandoned himself.

This doesn't mean this is the end.  This can be a time of reflection, of regret, of soul-searching, of eventual acceptance and growth and contentment.  Sometimes we have to hit our lowest point in order to get back up, simply because there's no other way to go (except death).  This is Hitari's lowest point--but, like Remin, the gods won't abandon him.

Hitari will be all right, in time.  He has to suffer the fallout of his own choices and, more importantly, face what was festering inside him that caused him to fall.  Because how can you fix yourself inside when you don't know what's wrong?  When you don't want to admit that anything IS wrong?  His entire world falling apart around him--all due to his own choices--will force him to self-reflect.

He'll have to look inside his own soul, and sometimes that's the hardest thing, because looking inside yourself that deeply means admitting that you're wrong, that you made a horrible mistake, that you weren't strong enough, that you were the hand that guided your own destruction--and what could be more painful than that?  Prison will force him to do that, and from there, he can abandon his father's lessons, shed his father's influence for good, and move on--spiritually, in his soul, and also in his heart.

- Jae

That's worse that what Liz and I come up with!!!!!

I don't think that Ritek is going to stay with Anosanim.  I don't see it happening yet.  None of them will find their perfect match until it's time for their book.  Right, Matthew?

And I agree with Jae about Hitari - he could become a better person in prison.

Maybe.
