Earlier this year, I commissioned a few pieces of fanart (mostly portraits, except the last one) for ITL that I never got to post here. I thought I could post them now, one every week until Christmas. This one's Talin. Art by Yukimi Mills. She has a very unique style, a sort of semi-realistic, sketchy style with a muted palette that gives an almost ethereal feel to her art. There's a portrait of Hitari that's supposed to go with this one as a set, which I'll post next week. In the first version she gave Talin a very nice Regency cravat, but then I remembered that the climate in Orina Anoris is hot, so I asked her to change it. She was very gracious about it and gave him a simple shirt instead. The portrait was done with no photo-references from me, only the descriptions from the story. Enjoy!

You're welcome guys! There'll be more coming.
Here's the second one from the "set", the portrait of Hitari. I think I speak for both myself and Yukimi Mills when I say that this one was a bitch. She drew a first version (completely finished and everything), but I didn't like it (the hair was wrong, the expression was wrong and it didn't really match the Talin portrait...). She kindly redrew it (she's a saint), but it still took a few edits to get to a version we could both agree on. I really like the result tough, the air/expression, the smirk, the hair, that's what I was going for. For next week, another portrait of Hitari, but in a completely different style.

Falconer it is absolutely gorgeous. I'm for and Hitari. The set is a perfect memory of a perfect moment in time when they both were happy, and we with them. Please thank Yukimi Mills for her dedication in bringing Hitari to life for me. I can't wait to see portrait #2.

This portrait of Hitari is by LeafOfSteel, again done with no photo-references from me, just the description from the story. I always wanted to commission her because the men she draws are always very handsome. This one's no exception and I find the eyes especially dreamy. In the first version, the hair was longer because I forgot to specify that it fell to his ears, but she kindly shortened it after that and this is the final version: Am I allowed to print that one out and turn it into a dartboard?
*chuckle* Don't worry, this was the last Hitari portrait (for now). Next week: matching portraits of Orinakin and Selorin in watercolor!

That is stunning! With all due respect to manga/comic styles, I prefer more more realistic features. I think the one by LeafofSteel is a perfect rendering of Hitari. Have you commissioned her to do any of the siblings? I can't wait to see her visions of them.

That portrait of the snake (aka Hitari Samora) reminds me strongly of the youngest Lawrence brother. Hmm A candidate to play Hitari in the movie and/or TV series?

This is a fantastic picture Falconer. Makes it even sadder that such a wonderful looking young man turned out to have challenged morals. Please thank her for me for creating such beauty for us to enjoy. & Are these going to be by a different artist?

Overall, the pieces I've commissioned are a pretty eclectic bunch style-wise, and these two are really nothing like the previous ones (or the ones that will follow). Kittehness is the same artist who painted the piece I posted for Remin's hair in the Hair-Thread ( http://matthewhaldemantime.com/board/index.php/topic,19.msg3856.html#msg3856). I loved the colors and how vibrant and thick the blond/yellow hair was, and so I was looking forward to her rendition of Orinakin and Selorin. She painted them on 3x3" paper with watercolors (!) so that alone is pretty amazing. The coloring is gorgeous and lively and I really like the way she mixed the different shades in their hair.
Next week, Anosanim!!

They are lovely Falconer. Very different from the other ones and very masculine. I think her style would go wonderful with Desin as well. Oh and we get Anosanim next week?

Here's Anosanim by Scarypet. I gave him photo-references for the face, the hair and the choker. I have to admit, the result is not quite it for me, but it's great art nonetheless and I really like the choker.
We're getting closer to the end! Only 2 more to go. Next week, Remin!!

I think it is lovely Falconer. But you are right I have an image of Anosanim with slightly less boyishly round features, a little more angular or sharpe especially his nose for some strange reason. And hair that is a brighter orange. The eyes are wonderful though and the choker is gorgeous.

This is a portrait of Remin done by Scarypet, the same artist who drew the Anosanim portrait posted last week. I gave him references for the face and how I wanted the hair. The expression and features are very close to the reference (which is what I wanted) and the result is gorgeous! Just one last commission left to post!! I want to keep it a surprise so I'll just say that it's not a portrait!

This is late, sorry! But, here's the final piece. Art is by the lovely Rue. I wanted this scene (I don't remember which chapter it's from but it's the one where Talin and Anosanim were in Talin's office, both painting/drawing - I think Anosanim was sitting on a couch, drawing with pastels and Talin was working on a canvas), illustrated and Rue, whom I know from LJ, agreed to do it for me. It was her first time doing commissions and she was a joy to work with, even researching photos of guys wearing heels in order to properly draw Anosanim's feet. I chose her because I love her use of color and her tegaki drawings are always very vivid and bright with a lot of different colors used for shadows and highlights. I knew that painting a scene where you have a predominantly red office, with one character dressed in red and has red hair and eyes and the other is dressed in orange and has orange hair and eyes would require a skillful use of colors and tones and I knew that she was the right person to handle it and that she could pull it off. She did, amazingly. This is so much better than what I was expecting, the details, the colors, the design of the room, the furniture. She came up with all of that and I love the result. This is why I saved her piece for last because this is what I wanted out of these commissions: to illustrate the text, to have the stories and characters in In This Land interpreted through imagery, and this is a prime example of that. This is it (until next time!). I'm grateful to the artists who shared their talent with us and their vision of ITL and its characters through their own unique style and technique, but I also want to thank Anaskee, CourtneyLee, LilacMajesty, Mountie, SilverMoon28 and Susanne for commenting here and for being generally awesome and keeping this board going. I've taken a break from ITL, but I'll be back. I hope you all enjoyed these and Happy Holidays! PS: If you want to see the entire image without scrolling across, you can find it here: http://i46.tinypic.com/118opkl.jpg
