Was his father tried and convicted before or after Talin and hitari started dating the first time or was it during? And I might have to bug MHT for ages soon too.

Dimi was the one who presided over Horimo Samora's trial, so it had to have been at least two years before Talin and Hitari got back together because that's how long it had been since Selorin ascended. Talin turned 18 two weeks before that, so if they were already together at that point, it may be possible that Hitari's dad was convicted while they were dating the first time. But something tells me that that isn't the case. I think it's more likely that Horimo was convicted before Talin and Hitari met.
